Students will learn how hand soldering works and practice soldering skills in this foundation course. Local 481 member Jose “Flecha” Hernandez will provide a brief presentation and then students will take part in hands-on work supported by mentors. This class is designed for Electric 1 and 2 members and those who would like to brush up on skills they will see on the job. This section will provide a review of basic soldering skills and lead into two more sections of the day which focus on working with DC batteries and end with an overview of LED lighting. The day will combine presentation, demonstration, and hands-on activities.

The two-hour course will be followed by individual respirator fit testing. Students will be properly fitted with a respirator by one of the instructors and given a North half-face respirator and filters to take with them. Course covers respirator use and importance; proper selection and matching of respirators and filters with the specific environmental hazards being faced; and maintenance, storage, and cleaning.
