IATSE TTF Safety First! Is Now an ETCP Recognized Electrical & Rigging Training Program

We’re excited to announce IATSE TTF Safety First! is now an ETCP Recognized Training Program! As an ETCP Recognized Electrical and Rigging Program, select Safety First! courses you complete on or after August 18, 2021 will provide you with continuing education credits you can use when you recertify. Don’t forget to apply for Certification Reimbursement after you receive your ETCP Certification!

Which TTF Safety First! Courses Are Eligible for ETCP Renewal Credit?

  • Introduction to Basic Entertainment Safety | 55 min: This course provides a general introduction to the world of workplace health and safety. It explains why worker health and safety is important, why injuries and illnesses occur in the workplace, effective injury and illness prevention programs, methods of hazard identification and control, and strategies to promote health and safety.

  • Electrical Safety | 45 min: This course covers basic electrical safety. Topics include recognition and mitigation of electrical hazards, cable protection, electrical safety devices, distribution equipment, and grounding.

  • Fall Prevention and Protection | 45 min: This course provides an overview of the safe practices pertaining to fall prevention and fall protection while working on the ground or at heights. Topics include housekeeping, slips and trips, hierarchy of controls, ladder safety, travel restraint and fall arrest systems, as well as specifics related to elevated work platform, rigging, and scaffold safety.

  • Mobile Elevating Work Platforms | 35 min: This course covers mobile elevating work platform safety and use. Topics include types of MEWPs, loads, inspections, fall hazards, and electrical hazards.

  • Scaffold Safety | 45 min: This course provides an overview of the use of scaffolds in a trade context. Topics include types of scaffolds, scaffold hazards and controls, and fall protection.

  • Ergonomics | 45 min: This course explains the causes of musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs), the basics of body mechanics, primary and secondary risk factors to MSIs, control of ergonomic risk factors, and elements of ergonomic hazard analyses.

  • Noise Exposure | 50 min: This course explains the effects and controls of noise exposure. Topics include basic ear anatomy, the components that make up sound, hearing disorders, noise controls, and elements of an effective hearing conservation program.

  • Hand and Portable Power Tools | 42 min: This course explains the inspection, care, and maintenance of equipment, as well as electrical hazards and important operational safety precautions for this equipment.

  • Rigging Safety | 1 hr: This course provides an overview of terminology and safe practices as they pertain to the methodology and materials used for rigging in the entertainment industry.

  • Hazard Identification and Safety in the Work Environment | 45 min: This course was designed to identify, give basic information, and share resources on hazards found in work environments. The main course presents an overview of situation awareness strategies and how they can be used to identify hazards. Once the main course is completed, users can choose from 40 different mini courses on numerous workplace hazards that allow participants to customize the learning experience to their needs.

How many credits are courses worth?

According to ESTA, courses count as 1 point per hour of attendance. Renewal Credits are offered in half (.5) units, based on 30 minutes of contact time rounded to the nearest 30 minutes. For example, 35 minutes = .5 RUs; 45 minutes = 1 Renewal Credit; and 1 hour and 40 minutes = 1.5 Renewal credits.

How do I submit my Safety First! course completions for credit?

Certification renewal instructions are listed on the ETCP website. We suggest you download your completion certificate from the TTF Safety First! Online Courses portal, so you can upload this as verification. ETCP allows you to log your credits along the way, so you can submit courses as soon as you finish them, and the ETCP Team will add them to your file.

How do I apply for Certification Reimbursement?

When you successfully recertify, you may be eligible for Certification Reimbursement. IATSE workers who obtain their ETCP Arena Rigger, Theater Rigger, Entertainment Electrician, or Portable Power Distribution Technician Certifications can apply to be reimbursed the cost of the certification. Your certification issue/effective date must fall within the calendar year or within six months of the date of your application. We can't issue reimbursements without proof of payment and proof of certification. Proof of certification must be in the form of a scanned or clearly photographed official certification. Proof of payment must be in the form of an official receipt from the certifying agency or organization offering the certification exam and must clearly reference payment for the applicant’s fees.
