Boston Hot Work Safety in Woburn, MA | Local 481

As of January 1, 2017, any person doing "hot work" (welding, grinding, powder driven fastening, etc.) within the city of Boston, MA must obtain a Boston Hot Work Safety Program Certificate. This certification is expected to become a statewide requirement in September 2017. In anticipation, IATSE Local 481 Trainer Jay Stone obtained a Boston Hot Work Safety Program Trainer certification, enabling Local 481 to hold entertainment industry-specific Boston Hot Work Safety certification classes. Class curriculum and certification is provided by the National Fire Protection Association.

This class can take four hours to deliver, including a written test, and can accept up to 20 students. Each class provides in-person training to meet these learning objectives:

  • Describe the various types of hot work
  • Identify common fuel sources and ignition sources
  • Cite relevant standards, regulations, and ordinances that are applicable to hot work
  • Define the duties and responsibilities of each person on the hot work team
  • Read and understand a hot work permit
