What’s the Difference Between Cleaning, Disinfecting, and Sanitizing?

Cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing are three terms that have become commonplace in our new COVID-19 vocabulary. The problem is that while these terms are often used interchangeably, their meanings are quite different. Understanding the difference between cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing is an important part of promoting safe return to work practices.

The IATSE Education Department and ICAP created a handout for IATSE workers and locals who want to understand the difference between these terms. They developed it using information provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Public Health Agency of Canada. The information in this handout is not exhaustive and entire trainings can and should be done to ensure that safe cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing practices are being implemented at work. The TTF Safety First! COVID-19: Recommended Guidelines online course provides further information and recommended practices to minimize the spread of COVID-19 upon returning to the workplace.
