Basic Audio Mixing with Powered Speaker and Wireless Microphone

Basic Audio Mixing is a hands-on experience for IATSE stage technicians. The participants will start with an inventory of the audio equipment, inspecting it for any damage. They will then set up the mixing console, apply power and while using an industry-standard microphone and headphones, adjust the controls of the mixing console. With a special focus on the necessity for the controls of the mixer and description of the stages of amplification within the mixer, a foundation for the purpose of mixing will be recognized. Students will next unpack and place a powered speaker in their workstation, and we will instruct and discuss the process of connecting and operating this speaker effectively. After three hours of working with these pieces of equipment, the class will take a meal break. After the meal break, the wireless microphone section will begin. This section will include connection of a wireless microphone to the mixing console, coordination of frequencies in the environment, setting the frequency, and programming the transmitter to sync with the receiver. A discussion of the RF frequency environment will be included to give a basic understanding of the challenges of using wireless microphones in a very crowded convention AV environment.
