Sewing for Film

This course covers the basics required to work as a professional costumer on motion picture productions. In this course, participants will learn how to hand sew buttons, repair a tear, replace a zipper, take in a waist, hem a pant and many other quick fixes on set. The course also includes getting familiar with a sewing machine and will demonstrate how to thread the machine and a bobbin, as well as basic machine sewing techniques.

Colleen Chabot began her career as a seamstress in 1980, working for the next ten years in men’s tailoring in a bridal service shop and sewing at home for private clients. She joined IATSE Local 500 in 2002 and has been employed consistently as a key stitcher for the Florida Grand Opera shop and on various Broadway shows and concerts in South Florida as both costumer and stitcher.

Colleen joined IATSE Local 477 in 2014 and immediately became an in-demand on-set tailor on such episodic projects as Magic City, Bloodline, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Marcel, and most recently M.I.A., as well as on features like Pain and Gain and Mrs. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. She lives in Hollywood in Broward County, Florida.
